Index crimes rose 14.7 percent over those reported in 1978. Larceny-theft was the largest category of Index crime reported and showed an increase of 13.5 percent over 1978. Violent crimes increased by 15.3 percent and nonviolent crimes increased by 14.7 percent over 1978. Additional information is given on the number of murders, the number of law enforcement officers killed or assaulted, crime clearance rates, arrest rates, and demographic information.
