Regarding the selection of corrections officers, the criteria depend on the corrections officer's role, which is in transition. Candidates should have an adequate general education, learning ability, and experience in life and work outside the institutional environment. Applicants should be selected through a standardized procedure, preferably through multidisciplinary selection commissions. Basic training should include courses in social sciences and law, sports, and the use of force. Training should be provided for specialized functions. Training schools should be located near correctional institutions so theory can be linked to practice. Teaching staff should be full time and rotated every 5 years. Trainee achievements should be assessed to determine training effectiveness. The goals of continuing education are the reactivation of knowledge, the exchange of professional experience, the clarification of motivations for professional behavior, the elimination of job frustrations, the dissemination of information on conflict resolution, and the development of further qualifications. The selection, training, and continuing education for other types of correctional staff are outlined.
