Data, activities, and accomplishments of the Virginia State Police are presented for the year 1980.
Abstract
The report details information about personnel, training, enforcement, central criminal records exchange, analysis of traffic crashes, and the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN). VCIN, a computer-controlled communications facility, is composed of 294 terminals and is maintained by 143 agencies. Also described are investigations, finances, communications, motor vehicle inspection, and approval of safety devices. During 1980, there were 116,382 crashes in which 1,045 persons received fatal injuries and 58,036 persons received nonfatal injuries. A total of 4,391 criminal investigations were conducted during the year, including crimes against persons, crimes against property, and statutory crimes. Virginia's periodic motor inspection received recognifion for being outstanding. The percentage of defective vehicles found on inspection amounted to about 21.2 percent, a decrease of about 12.1 percent from 1979. In addition, the department created a new division to improve delivery of services to northern Virginia.
