Prepared for youth in the Remington, Hampden, Woodberry, and Medfield neighborhoods of Baltimore, this guide provides information on health, social, law enforcement, and educational services as well as practical advice on coping with problems in daily living.
Abstract
The booklet details procedures for obtaining free or low cost medical care and offers suggestions regarding health emergencies, keeping appointments, and using the emergency room. The section on social services discusses food stamps, day care, and emergency assistance, but also tells youths the kind of treatment to expect in dealing with the Department of Social Services. Sources of help in sexual matters address birth control, pregnancies, venereal disease, and rape. The Maryland Minor Medical Treatment Law is summarized. Organizations which give general counseling and assistance with alcohol or drug abuse are identified. Following a summary of basic arrest procedures, processes of the District Court and the juvenile court are reviewed. Appeals, legal counsel, and getting help from the police are also considered. The survey of schools and education details laws on school attendance and ways of getting help with school problems. Practical suggestions relating to daily living skills cover transportation, obtaining basic documents, handling money, and consumer rights. Techniques for job hunting and finding a place to live are described, as are recreation activities available in the community. Telephone numbers, addresses, and hours of business are provided for all resources mentioned in the guide. An index is included.
