Abstract
The assessment of crime and system performance covers crime trends; offender processing; and juveniles, delinquency, and the juvenile justice system. The discussion of system efforts, impacts, gaps, and problems considers law enforcement, courts and the administration of justice, adult and juvenile corrections, and special interest areas, including delinquency prevention, crime prevention, substance abuse, domestic violence, and criminal justice training. Recommendations for action from 1982 to 1986 focus on each of the areas discussed in the section on system efforts, impacts, gaps, and problems. Recommendations for the courts and the administration of justice cover judicial sentencing; computer options for the judicial system; victim, witness, and jury assistance; career criminal programs; and competent defense for indigents. Recommendations for juvenile corrections treat law enforcement services, court intake services, court dispositional alternative services, court aftercare services, community-based alternatives, detention services, juveniles in jail, and learning centers. Recommendations for criminal justice training focus on police training, judicial education, training for prosecutors, adult correctional personnel, and juvenile justice and delinquency prevention personnel. Appended is an explanation of the estimated number of crimes provided in the data. Tabular and graphic data are provided.
