Abstract
The introductory section presents the history of the Iowa Uniform Crime Reporting program, along with the reporting method and the organization of the report. The first major section of the report presents data on (1) total index crimes reported and total index crime rate, (2) monthly offense pattern and offense characteristics, (3) rate of change by population category, (4) national comparison, (5) arson, and (6) assaults on law enforcement officers. The second major section provides data on general crime statistics, arrests for Part I crimes and Part II crimes, juvenile arrests, and law enforcement employee data. There were 137,763 index crimes reported to Iowa law enforcement agencies in 1980, compared to 124,873 in 1979, an increase of 10.3 percent. Both violent and property crime increased. Reported violent crimes rose 10.7 percent, while property crimes increased from 119,615 to 131,941, a 10.3 percent increase. The substantial majority of the reported crime occurred in the cities, with only 12.9 percent reported from rural areas. Tabular and graphic data are provided.
