Relevant data and significant accomplishments and activities of the Pennsylvania Bureau of Correction for the period January 1, 1980, to June 30, 1981, are presented in this report.
Abstract
During this 18-month period, the bureau has implemented an annual health care survey, annual physical examinations for inmates over age 40, the use of Medic-Alert bracelets in all facilities, and therapeutic diets as prescribed by physicians. Improvements in food services have also been implemented. Training was substantially increased for counselors and for officers working in restricted housing units. More than 3,000 State and county employees have received basic, specialized, or advanced training through the bureau's training academy. The bureau is in the process of having its institutions accredited according to the standards of the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections. However, the department still faces a grave challenge in overcrowded facilities and an urgent need for additional correctional facilities. Tabular data and narrative information are provided for the divisions of community services; finance, planning, and research; industries; operations; personnel management; program; special services; and staff development. Information for each of the nine State correctional institutions is given on accomplishments, operations, treatment, training, fiscal matters, and the inmate complaint system. Maps, graphs, and photographs are included.
