This course is designed for presentation by two trainers and takes approximately 4 days or 26 hours to complete. The ideal class size is 8 to 10 persons. After an orientation session on the course's background and objectives, the role of the supervisor is addressed. Areas covered include the transition from subordinate to supervisor, analyzing the functions of each position, analyzing organizational contacts within and outside the organization, and management skills. The sections on staff development discuss motivating subordinates, evaluating an employee's performance, and detecting promotion potential. Planning and problemsolving methods are also reviewed, as are elements which contribute to good management. Supervisory controls over the work efforts are explored, with attention to work review. Other topics considered include counseling skills, concerns about image, and characteristics of the creative supervisor. Each unit contains an abbreviated lecture, discussion questions, handouts, and exercises in which class members play the role of supervisor and the trainer acts the subordinate. A critique form to measure course presentation as well as student understanding and three short quizzes are provided.
