This technical assistance report provides a 35-State appellate court survey containing the most current information available on the treatment of petitions for certiorari and oral argument cases.
Abstract
Data were gathered through anaysis of States' responses to a questionnaire. Major topics addressed in the questionnaire include description of the court, disposition of petitions for review or certiorari, dispositions of cases heard on oral argument, and additional information. Within these categories, a number of specific issues are addressed. Jurisdiction, number of justices, and number of law clerks are identified under court description by each responding State. Also considered are the number of petitions received during 1979, the number of petitions acted on during 1978, the average number of days elapsed between filing and action on a petition, and procedures for handling petitions. A similar format is employed to present data about cases heard on oral argument. Additional information includes the name, address, and telephone number of each respondent, further comments, and completion date. Report information is presented in alphabetical order according to jurisdiction.
