The historical background, organization, and present working conditions of the National Laboratory of Forensic Science are described, and technical divisions and departments in police departments and universities are discussed. The organization of forensic science research and instruction in the United States is addressed, with specific comments on LEAA, the National Institute of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, the FBI, and State- and university research. Research conditions in Canada, England, Poland, and other Western European countries are also described. The need for forensic science research in Sweden is emphasized, and the text proposes that Swedish science councils (1) establish a research group at the National Laboratory of Forensic Science, a fellowship program, and a committee with the general function of following the developments in the forensic science and technology field. Also suggested is the attachment of the National Laboratory of Forensic Science professorship to a university, the establishment of a program of study in the subject, and the development of a course for the degree of Ph.D. in forensic science. Expenditure data regarding these proposals are presented along with an organizational chart and a list of the National Laboratory's instruments and apparatus.
