The first year of an innovative training program in advanced criminal justice practices is described.
Abstract
The Executive Training Program (ETP) is designed to transfer the findings of research and model projects to influential criminal justice officials in States, counties, and cities throughout the country. In the first year of ETP, training programs were developed in managing criminal investigations, juror usage and management, rape and its victims, and prison grievance mechanisms. Forty workshops were held in all regions of the country on these topics. More than 2,100 administrators involved in criminal justice operations were introduced to provocative and practical techniques for improving their operations. Early indications are that the effects of ETP have been enormous. Officials from more than half the agencies represented have indicated they are implementing one or more of the specific aspects of the technology discussed at the workshops or in the field test training, follow-on training, and special national workshops. Plans for the second year are to conduct training workshops in managing patrol operations, developing sentencing guidelines, victim and witness services, and health care in correctional institutions. Field test training will be conducted in neighborhood justice centers. Program organization and support groups are described, and the names of the staff of ETP are listed.
