Abstract
During this period, the Public Defender received 29,600 new cases. A total of 3,250 applicants were financially ineligible and were denied services. The legal staff numbered 54 attorneys. The caseload averaged 495 cases per attorney, compared to 471 in 1978-79. Court appearances totaled 70,022, or 1,296 per attorney. Trials, hearings, and motions numbered 6,960. Workload activity data are given for the investigation division and the administrative services division. Success rates are noted for trials; preliminary hearings; settlements; and motions, writs, and appeals. Special problems (clerical staff shortages and consolidation of the municipal courts) are mentioned, and achievements are described. Personal honors and appointments, financial data, and case costs are examined. Tables and charts are appended.
