Data are provided on the county of commitment for all new 1979 New York State commitments for driving while intoxicated (DWI) or criminally negligent homicide involving DWI.
Abstract
A June 1980 New York State survey examined the case histories of all 20 new commitments in 1978 for DWI or criminally negligent homicide involving DWI. One of the most notable findings of this survey was that all 20 of the cases were committed from upstate counties. None of the 20 cases were committed from the nine-county New York City region. The survey reported here examined the counties of commitment of all 1979 new commitments for DWI and criminally negligent homicide involving DWI. This survey found that all of the 11 DWI cases received in 1979 were committed from upstate counties, thus corresponding with the findings of the 1978 survey; however, while none of the 5 criminally negligent homicide cases involving DWI were received from the New York City region in 1975, 2 of the 5 cases received in 1979 were from the New York City region. The findings of the two surveys suggest the need for an analysis of regional differences in the incidence, arrest, conviction, and commitment rates for DWI. Tabular data are provided.
