A comprehensive profile of the truant population of Tanipahoa Parish, La., is presented.
Abstract
Juveniles adjudicated as in need of supervision because of truancy during the 1979-80 school year were included in the study. Thirty-five of the 64 in the sample were compared by race, age, and sex. The sample was divided into the following groups: (1) the remission group, (2) the continued truancy group, (3) the dropout group, and (4) the unidentified group. The wide-range from the Personality Research Form was administered to the subjects to determine need for achievement scores. Other information was obtained through abstracting court and school records and through personal interviews with subjects and their parents in their homes. Findings showed that more persons in the continued truancy group associated with other truants than did those in the remission group. Further, those who dropped out of school associated with more truants than did those who remained in school but continued to be truant. More children in the remission group had family transportation than did those who remained truant. More of those in the remission group had two parental figures in the home than the children who remained truant. Moreover, more children who dropped out of school had two parental figures in the home than did those who remained truant. Those in the dropout group had siblings who were dropouts than did those in the remission group. Tabular data and 23 references are provided.
