This research assessed the needs of prisoners' wives in six areas (information, finances, relationships with friends, family relationships, grief, and relationships with children) to determine if stage of separation or previous experience with the correctional system affected those needs.
Abstract
Subjects were 21 spouses (average age 23) of inmates incarcerated at the Kansas State Industrial Reformatory, interviewed by researchers using a 27-item needs assessment questionnaire. High levels of need were found in each area. Women in the initial stages of separation had significantly greater need for information than women in the prereunion state, and prior experience with the correctional system did not predict needs. The results indicate that prisoners' wives would be helped by providing them with more information at the time of their husbands' trials and encouraging the formation of self-help groups for inmates' families. Tables and 20 references are supplied. (Author abstract modified)
