There were 123 felon escapes from the Virginia Correctional System during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1981, an increase of 39.8 from the 88 escapes occurring in 1980.
Abstract
Escape information is presented according to several offender characteristics, including race and sex, month of escape, time of day escape occurred, parole status, length of sentence, time served prior to escape, age, previous criminal record, and others. Of the 123 escapees, 89 were white males. The largest number of escapes occurred in October. A total of 52 percent of the escapees were recaptured within 24 hours; 21.1 percent remained at large 30 days after the escape. Graphs and 34 tables are provided.
