About 30 percent report that someone in their household has been a victim of crime, and 57 percent know someone who has been a victim of crime within the last 2 years. In the same 2 years, 11 percent of the respondents bought a gun for self-protection. Most citizens see crime as occurring somewhere other than in their own community, and most feel safe during the day in their residential area. Other survey findings relate to correctional facilities (capacity, sentencing) and police effectiveness. Survey data, three references, and recommended sentences for convicted offenders are included.
