A 1982 survey of 38 Statistical Analysis Centers (SAC) in the States and territories provides an up-to-date picture of their organization, statistical and analytic capabilities, staffing, funding, and use of computer resources.
Abstract

Questionnaires were sent to SAC directors or representatives in 47 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands and returned by 86 percent of the sample. A total of 47 percent of the SAC's were under the Criminal Justice Council (CJC) compared to 76 percent in 1980. Thus, the trend of moving out of the CJC continues as LEAA funds expire. Furthermore, 71 percent reported that their SAC's were likely or very likely to continue. SAC's worked most often with corrections departments, courts/sentencing commissions, public safety departments, and other law enforcement agencies. The average length of operations for SAC's nationally was 6.5 years. Most received Bureau of Justice Statistics and State funds, having an average total funding of $175,000 per year. Tables and graphs are supplied.
