The classification system consists of the following elements: (1) compilation of all necessary and pertinent investigative data; (2) completions of risk assessment, including basic identifying data, scoring on eight risk categories, determination of total risk score, and corresponding level of supervision; (3) completion of need/strength assessment, including scoring on 10 need/strength categories, brief narrative summary of findings, and a supervision plan; and (4) periodic reassessments. Standards for the assessment of offender risk are presented, along with a commentary on each standards, and guidelines are provided for the clarification of issues and problems in the assessment of offender needs and strengths. Needs and strengths are divided into the major categories of educational, employment, marital and family relationships, alcohol and other drug use, counseling, health, and financial management. In each of these areas, guidance is provided for identifying problems and developing a supervision approach. Forms used in the assessments of offender risks and needs/strengths are appended.
