This annual report provides 61 tables of comprehensive data on spending and personnel levels for 1979 for Federal, State, and local governments in six sectors: police protection, judicial, legal services and prosecution, public defense, corrections, and 'other criminal justice.'
Abstract

Expenditure data are provided for fiscal year 1979; employment and payroll data are for the month of October 1979. In addition, the report presents expenditure on capital outlay, intergovernmental expenditure, employment and payroll data by sector for individual State governments and the aggregate of local governments by type (counties and municipalities) within each State. Expenditure, employment, and payroll detail by sector are also given for 349 county governments with populations of 100,000 or more and for 415 municipalities with populations of 50,000 or more. Other tabular presentations include (1) distribution of sworn and nonsworn police employment and payrolls by State and type of government, and (2) correctional institution and probation, pardon, and parole expenditure by State and type of government. Data analysis and survey methodology are presented in an introductory text and supplemented by a graphic summary of the 1979 data. A brief foreword explains future changes in justice data collection strategies. (Author abstract)
