Abstract
The title pertains to police forces which handle small arms regularly (i.e., the District Armed Police Reserve and Special Armed Police Battallions). The former is used for providing guards and escorts, while the latter are the State reserve for use during violent disturbance, dacoity (bandit) operations, and guarding of sensitive areas to maintain internal security. Recently, some of the State reserves have been deployed to other States for border or internal security purposes. These practices, particularly in relation to civil disturbances, have evoked public criticism and unease at the apparent expansion of power and increasing deployment of the Armed Police.
