From Dec. 4, 1970, through Dec. 18, 1970, cases investigated by these four details were isolated and traced through the investigative process. Data collection instruments included the case sheet, daily activities sheet, and the case status report. Findings show that detectives' activities can be subjected to workload measurement. A time breakdown can be made of the amount of time detectives spend on administrative duties, gathering evidence, handling suspects, coordination with other agencies, court-related tasks, and non-job-related activities. The average amount of time detectives spent on processing specific types of cases also can be determined. These capabilities are essential in order to determine the number of detectives required and to establish departmental policy for those cases requiring followup investigation by detectives.
