In 1980, South Dakota's crime rate was at its highest ever recorded. The crime rate (for Part I crimes) during 1980 was 3,243.2 per 100,000 population, while the rate for the Nation was 5,899.9 per 100,000 population.
Abstract
During the year, 22,320 Part I offenses were reported by law enforcement agencies in the State. Total reported Index crimes increased by 22.5 percent since 1974 and by 9.4 percent since 1979. Tabular and graphic data illustrate property and violent crimes, changes in Part I offenses since 1974, crime rates in States similar to South Dakota, crime rates in South Dakota cities, and crime trends for specific crimes (robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny/theft, and motor vehicle theft).
