The Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Justice hears testimony from citizens and government officials on the juvenile drug abuse problem, its connection with crime, and its possible prevention.
Abstract
The owner of the Washington Bullets basketball team describes the ordeal of one of his players experiencing a drug problem and how the team rallied around him to help. The State's Attorney for Dade County, Fla., discusses the crime problem in the juvenile population and attempts to rehabilitate those young offenders incarcerated for drug-related crimes, as well as steps being taken to limit the importation of dangerous drugs. Another official describes the role taken by the National Institute on Drug Abuse to fight the drug problem, particularly through drug information dissemination and funding activities. Human service agency representatives discuss rehabilitation and treatment services for these youths, and a judge comments on the difficulties faced by courts in deciding how to deal with young people today who perceive drugs as a positive value in their lives. Some statistical data are included.
