This report describes the data collection procedures and code files used in a survey of high and low crime neighborhoods in Atlanta. The study attempted to link objective characteristics of high crime neighborhoods with the environmental and social characteristics (territoriality) that are believed to influence criminal activity and crime control.
Abstract
The three neighborhoods surveyed were Dixie Hills and Grove Park, Pittsburgh and Mechanicsville, and Virginia-Highland. This report presents the survey's PLAN and SURVEY codebooks file. The PLAN file contains information on every parcel of land within the study neighborhoods, and the SURVEY file contains the results of a household survey administered in 1980 to a stratified random sample of households in each study area. Information on neighborhood characteristics is available from the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research in two formats: card image and OSIRIS. The OSIRIS data file is included.
