Control features are needed as a fundamental part of operating system design so that they cannot be evaded by systems or users.
Abstract
Typical features of operating software are evaluated against needs, and shortcomings are identified. The advantages and disadvantages of built-in and add-on security packages are analyzed. The typical operating system -- ICL's GEORGE 3 -- is described in detail. The features of several security packages added on to the standard IBM operating systems for more protection are discussed.
