Testing procedures for West German police recruits are over 10 years old; they no longer reflect current social conditions nor do they test abilities required in contemporary police work. A revised testing framework is proposed with emphasis on the personality requirements of policing.
Abstract
While the old criteria assessed basic knowledge, subject knowledge, and performance capacity, current needs require additional measures of leadership ability. The characteristics indicative of leadership relate to interaction with others; self-concept, self-control, and motivation; decisionmaking, oversight, and command aptitude; and planning, organizing, and administrative skills. The new battery of tests will specifically measure verbal and nonverbal intelligence; motor coordination, perception, and memory; and personality and attitude factors. Self-evaluation of abilities and biographical factors will also be considered. The training program is to be enhanced by stress management instruction for all officers.
