The effectiveness of personal security measures depends on knowledge, continuous planning, the ability to make decisions, and successful 'blending,' i.e., not making one's worth and status prominent so as to bring them to the awareness of a criminal element. Threatening elements (enemies) can include criminals, mobs and demonstrators, radicals, terrorists, criminal terrorists, and revolutionaries. Ensuring residential security rests upon (1) the proper location, construction, and victimization history of the residence; (2) the use of strong and properly locked exterior doors and windows; (3) the creation of a 'safe haven' in the home where intrusion is particularly difficult and from which help can be summoned; (4) the use of burglar and smoke alarms; (5) the use of dogs; and (6) limiting access to the residence. Particular precautions must be taken to secure the residence during periods of prolonged absences from the residence. Business security depends upon the proper location and construction of the facility, the proper training and use of a security officer, the creation of a particularly secure room for valuable items and equipment, access control, burglar alarm systems, and the proper security for and use of doors, windows, fences, lighting, guard dogs, and communications. General precautions should be taken when traveling, and particular security procedures should be followed according to the mode of travel and the places of residence while traveling.
