Parole supervision appears to be associated with reduced recidivism among some types of ex-inmates. Of all inmates released in the State during 1972, 66.2 percent recommitted within a 5-year period were reimprisoned within the first 2 years of their release. Over 53 percent of those recommitted within the 5-year period were returned to prison for parole violations. Spending on parole supervision might be more easily managed if 2 years of supervision were established as a maximum. The report includes tables and endnotes.
