Three years of experience with a program using labor union volunteers to work with young adult offenders are described.
Abstract
The volunteers, who take an intensive training course and are assigned by staff to the offenders to work with them on a one-to-one basis, act as role models and ease entry into the world of work for the offenders, who are referred by probation officers. Of the 415 offenders, 2.1% violated probation and 85% were in a work or training situation at the time of the follow-up, an average of 2.5 years after referral to the project. The project's relative success is attributed to the volunteers' union background, staff-volunteer interaction, thorough training of the volunteers, and their range. (Author abstract)
