The corrections literature is replete with themes of organizational conflict. Recent efforts to combat such conflict have been directed toward the professionalization of the management staff. This paper assesses the nature and extent of the linkage between professionalization, on the one hand, and role conflict, work alienation, and anomia on the other.
Abstract
Data for the project came from the response of 84 prison supervisors working in six adult correctional institutions in a Midwestern state. Using multivariate regression techniques, we found that professionalization affects each of the criterion variables, but in different ways. The paper concludes by relating research findings to those reported elsewhere. (Author abstract)
