The course is designed to meet the basic supervisory training needs of a large urban or metropolitan police agency by preparing the student to identify problems confronting the new supervisor and apply the techniques appropriate for dealing with these problems. The student will also be able to identify the duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of the supervisor. Units cover the transition from patrol officer to supervisor; the role of the supervisor; leadership techniques; motivational techniques; supervisory reporting and communications; conflict, cooperation, and morale; vicarious liabilities of supervisors; personnel evaluation; and discipline problems. The objective of each unit is specified, and the hours allotted for each topic are listed. Teaching methods include lecture-forum, student projects, and 'in-basket' problems. Other information included is the reference material used in developing the traiing program, a list of equipment needed, and the logistics required for the training.
