This collection presents a series of articles on the role of the school as an arena of crime prevention in its mission of socializing youths into the dominant value system and spotting early signs of juvenile deviance.
Abstract
A total of 16 articles are divided topically. Section themes concern the school situation as it currently copes with its educational mission and deviant phenomena, the possibilities of delinquency prevention in the school setting, and legal issues raised by conducting empirical research on students and school programs. Specific articles deal with learning disabilities, school-home interaction, students' negative perceptions of the school experience, the role of poor academic grades as contributors to deviant behavior, teacher attitudes and skills in reaction to behavior problems, and drug use in schools. Possible interventions and program proposals discussed include social work in schools and therapeutic-pedagogical approaches that combine behavior modification and educational objectives. Individual papers contain data tables and bibliographies. An index is provided.
