Annotation
Chapters focus on the development and character of criminology in the individual countries of Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, with particular attention to the status of criminology as an occupational system.
Abstract
Each chapter has a similar format. The definition of criminology in each country is considered, and the education and recruitment of criminologists are described. Attention is also given to the place of specialists in criminology among the traditional disciplines of law, biology, and the social and behavioral sciences. Other topics considered for each country are the regularized channels of communication among criminologists; whether criminological research is conducted regularly and in what organizational setting; and the general parameters of the social, cultural, economic, and political setting within which criminology emerged in the country. The scope and nature of crime in each country are briefly considered as well. Tables, chapter notes, an index, and some annotated bibliographies are provided. For individual entries, see NCJ 91323-55.
