This research report presents a statistical description of characteristics of offenders released to the streets from Massachusetts correctional institutions during 1980 with corresponding recidivism rates.
Abstract
The statistics are available for men released from 9 correctional institutions, 5 drug programs, 13 prerelease centers, and 2 other facilities. Statistics are also available for women released from one correctional institution and three prerelease centers. A total of 941 offenders (779 males and 162 females) were released from these correctional facilities. Statistics include recidivism rates associated with individual characteristics with regard to release variables, nature of present offense variables, personal background characteristics, criminal history variables, furlough participation variables, and release followup variables. Tables contain two types of information: statistical data describing characteristics of individuals released from each correctional facility during 1980 and the rates of recidivism cross tabulated with each of the categories of the statistical data for these individuals.
