Information is provided to volunteers who work in shelter houses which assist battered women and their children. Volunteers are urged to remain calm in order to effectively help victims.
Abstract
They are reminded that their efforts are necessarily limited and that they should not take personal responsibility for the ultimate happiness of every client they see at the shelter. The guide specifically addresses shelter house policies and procedures, ethical considerations, what to expect in working with victims, and the personal qualities required to be an effective volunteer. Also discussed are effective communication techniques and telephone crisis counseling. A flow chart for handling domestic violence crisis calls is included, and suggested readings and films are listed.
