Maryland courts continued to experience increasing workloads in fiscal 1983.
Abstract
The Court of Appeals had over 850 filings for the second consecutive year. The Court of Special Appeals continued an upward climb in caseload (1,968 cases), with the majority of filings being criminal cases. Innovations implemented to help assist the Special Court of Appeals include the prehearing conference procedure; the expedited appeal process; and Chapter 295 of the Acts of 1983, which treats appeals involving a review of conviction following a plea of guilty as discretionary rather than as a right. Circuit court filings and the District Court's workload also increased. The report includes information on judicial revenues and expenditures, judicial administration, court-related units, judicial conferences, and judicial appointments and removals. Maps and photographs are supplied. For related report, see NCJ 91884.
