Annotation
This study examines both the incidence and prevalence of the use of force among a random sample of 3,155 Ohio law enforcement officers.
Abstract
In addition to the use of deadly force (i.e., firearms), this work examines the use of non-lethal force by law enforcement officers as well, including night sticks, chemical mace, and personal defense tactics. More than simply an inventory of types of force used and their frequency, this information is set against selected characteristics of the officers and the encounter. In this way it is possible to discern what types of officers use force and how often these activities become necessary in the routine performance of police work. Charts and tabular material are provided. A listing of other publications by the same publisher is included.
