Spatial patterns of crime in Indian cities conform to the general regional occurrences of crime. Cities located in north-central 'subculture' regions have the main concentration of violent, economic, and group crimes.
Abstract
South Indian cities mainly show a relatively lower incidence of all crime types. The analysis used data for 14 different types of crime to look at intercity crime patterns in India. Standard correlation techniques were used to analyze the interrelationships between different types of crime and the spatial distribution of these types. Factor analysis was applied to regionalize crime groups. An attempt is made to explain the crime patterns which emerge from the analysis, particularly the concentration of crime in the north-central region of India. Figures, tables, 1 note, and 16 references are included. (Author abstract modified)
