This discussion of interrogation techniques using hypnosis, polygraphy, narcoanalysis, voice stress analysis, and pupillometrics describes the various techniques, their reliability, and the admissibility in court of the evidence obtained under each technique.
Abstract
In considering hypnosis as a method of memory enhancement, the discussion covers the nature of hypnosis, investigative hypnosis techniques, the reliability of information obtained by hypnosis, and the admissibility of information obtained through hypnosis. The section on the reliability of information obtained by hypnosis considers the psychology of perception and memory, the psychological effects of interrogation, and the legal reliability of hypnosis for memory enhancement. The discussion of the legal admissibility of information obtained under hypnosis covers posthypnotic testimony, testimony under hypnosis, prior statements under hypnosis, and expert testimony. In examining the use of the polygraph in interrogation, attention is given to the psychophysiological basis of polygraphy, polygraphy procedures and techniques, the reliability of the polygraph, the polygraph as evidence, and the compulsory polygraph testing of the employee. The use of narcoanalysis involves the administering of 'truth' serum, while the voice stress analysis is associated with the measurement of psychological stress. Pupillometrics associates the physical dynamics of eye movements with deception. About 225 bibliographic listings, chapter footnotes, and a subject index are provided.
