NCJ Number

Date Published

Length
17 pages
Annotation
This booklet instructs children on safety procedures for dealing with strangers outside the home, at the door of the home, and on the phone.
Abstract
The format of the booklet consists of conversations between the children and two friends, Hoop and Hoopie. Advice on dealing with strangers outside the home consists of not accepting anything from strangers, not accepting an invitation to go anywhere with a stranger, not talking with strangers or answering questions, not going to a public restroom alone, and telling parents about any strangers that have tried to talk to you. Children are also instructed not to wear clothing or tags with their names on them, since this will enable strangers to call them by name and appear to be friends. Advice for dealing with strangers at the door of the home includes not answering the door when the child is home alone, locking all the outside doors, and informing parents about any strangers who have come to the door. Advice on dealing with strangers on the phone includes not providing information on when parents will be home and not providing any personal information. Other safety hints are provided on dealing with various emergencies and following general safety rules.
