This educational program teaches survival skills to children in grades three through five.
Abstract
The program teaches crime prevention and emergency procedures to young children who are frequently alone. The guide contains step-by-step instructions for organizing volunteers and materials and includes comprehensive lesson plans and activity sheets. The manual identifies community helpers and encourages discussions about real problems and hazards children face through the use of selected films, artwork, guest speakers, crime prevention rules, vocabulary work, and role-play. The curriculum teaches children how to make emergency phone calls and how to react to potentially dangerous situations. The most important concept the children learn is that their unique problems and anxieties are shared by others who are also alone. The program design assumes that the 7-hour program will be taught for 6 days. While the format is most appropriate for the classroom, it can also be used in the workshops and seminars for scouting programs and other youth related organizations. The manual provides materials lists, charts, lesson plans, activity sheets, and optional activities.
