Social tensions in Calcutta are sought to be quantified, comparatively with those in four other cities of India, on the basis of crime data.
Abstract
Three criteria for gauging the social aspect are adopted: participation, openness and sporadic occurrence. Calcutta has a high rate of harm-oriented, but low gain-oriented crimes. Their incidence vary according to changing political fluctuations. Apparently, organized labour movement has no positive relationship with urban crimes. (Author abstract)
