This manual provides guidance on the establishment of a Firehawk Children's Program (FCP), which is designed to promote fire safety and education for children.
Abstract
Recognizing that firesetting by children is a significant problem which needs immediate attention, the FCP provides (1) fire safety and prevention educational materials, games, and activities; (2) a companion program pairing children with firefighter volunteers; (3) a referral program designed to connect children and families having complex problems to helping professional agencies; and (4) an apprentice program providing fire department activities for children interested in firefighter careers. Modules in this manual include descriptions of child firesetters who pose 'little risk,' 'definite risk,' and 'extreme risk;' a discussion of FCP management activities; recruiting and training firefighter volunteers for the program; child and family evaluation; the educational program; the referral program; the apprentice program; and community relations. The development of each program component is described.
