The National Criminal Justice Thesaurus contains listings of descriptors or terms used to index literature in the National Institute of Justice/NCJRS document data base and to retrieve information about the literature for users of the service.
Abstract
Two types of terms are listed: descriptors and synonyms or near synonyms. Scope notes explain the specific use of a term in the NCJRS system. The 'used for' entry shows the user that the descriptor includes a certain concept. A 'narrower term' entry denotes a hierarchical relationship between the main descriptor and a more specific term. A 'broader term' entry is the reciprocal of the narrower term entry. The 'related term' entries alerts the user to other terms. Geographic descriptors are provided in a separate section. A 'keyword-out-of-context' list is provided to assist in finding the proper descriptors.
