Adding the local jail population would increase this figure to 1.4 percent. The majority of those under correctional care on a given day are on probation. Different jurisdictions vary in the relative mix of sanctions for offenders. Ten jurisdictions reported 1 percent or more of the adult population on probation at the end of 1983. Twenty-six jurisdictions reported more than 1 percent of the adult population on probation or parole or in prison on that date; five reported more than 2 percent. During 1983, the adult probation population increased by 10.7 percent, and the adult parole population increased by more than 12.1 percent. Data tables give State-by-State analyses, types of probation exits, types of parole entries and exits, and the ratios of different types of offenders to the adult population in each State.
