Abstract
The literature included explores various approaches to solving unnecessary, unmanageable, and dysfunctional conflicts over environmental issues. Also noted are resources from international, community, and labor-management conflict resolution and from the social sciences. The periodicals represented range from 'Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists' to 'Fortune,' 'Western School Review,' 'Environmental Professional,' and 'Journal of Conflict Resolution.' Specific topics addressed include the process of resolving the Snoqualmie Dam controversy; a comparison of labor relations and environmental mediation; changes in the legal status of property rights; a consensus building project dealing with radioactive waste management issues; surveys of theoretical approaches, concepts, and tools for conflict resolution; statistical studies of site-specific environmental conflicts involving industrial facilities from 1970 to 1978; a description of the mediation process used to settle a dispute over the licensing and developing of a hydroelectric project on the Goose River in Maine; the story of the West Side Highway in New York City; a dispute between two local jurisdictions over the siting of sewage treatment facilities; and a description of the mediation efforts which successfully ended a 5-year impasse that prevented Rhode Island from acquiring 4000 acres of surplus Navy land.
