There has been a growing consensus that silence condones, and that public and private leaders in Maryland communities, counties, and the State must speak out often and forcefully against bigotry and violence.
Abstract
The Task Force on Violence and Extremism, established on March 31, 1981, was charged with assessing the internal structure of Maryland State Government to make certain the State does not condone or tolerate acts of intimidation or bigotry; and developing an effective system of law enforcement, human relations, and education programs to assess this issue, including the establishment of a standardized system of identifying and reporting racial, religious, and ethnic acts of intimidation, bigotry, or violence throughout the State. The Task Force is supposed to pursue programs and changes in the areas of victim assistance, education, and prevention. Progress of the Task Force in carrying out its mission in each of its areas of responsibility is noted.
