This report combines statistical data on the number of felony cases processed, their dispositions, and case processing times in New York's Nassau County for 1981, 1982, and 1983, along with information on dispositions by the district court and an analysis of charge at arrest versus conviction charge.
Abstract
Information was obtained from the district attorney's computerized information system, which is programmed to follow cases from the original charge to the final disposition. The report outlines the steps in processing both felony and misdemeanor cases, using flow charts to illustrate these procedures. Tables then summarize all dispositions of felony indictments in the county for the 3 years, noting changes between years and types of dispositions, with comparisons to the State as a whole. Other tables outline the content of all felony dispositions in the county court and types of sentences imposed, with separate breakdowns for robbery and burglary. The time to process a felony case in the county court also is charted. The report provides the same information for the district court in order to present a definitive picture of the criminal justice system. The final section presents a comparison of arrest versus conviction charge designed to show any charge reduction prior to conviction. Charts illustrate many of the statistical tables.
