This guide for lawyers who are occasionally invited to be resource people in high school law classes is a supplement to the law-related curriculum.
Abstract
The first part consists of legal summaries and cases related to the criminal justice system, criminal procedure, free expression, equal protection, religion and constitutional law, family law, and consumer law. The summaries are designed to give lawyers and law students an overview and update on substantive issues of interest to secondary students. The summaries are similar in style to a legal handbook and are not intended as student texts. A number of cases are provided with each substantive section. The second part contains eight lesson-length excerpts from current, representative law-related education publications. Topics include dispute settlement, the nature of a contract, corrective justice, the right to petition, due process in public schools, and the case method. These selections introduce lawyers to the variety of texts, topics, and methods that are being used today in secondary schools. In addition, brief notes on effective classroom planning and presentation are provided. Appended is a list of resources for educators, lawyers, and law students for use in secondary classrooms.
